Code of Conduct
The purpose of our code of conduct is to clarify and publish expectations for student behaviour while at school, while going to and from school (including on buses) and while attending any school function or activity at any location.
Students, teachers and parents are partners in the BESS ROCKS program. The main tenets of Respect, Ownership, Cooperation, Kindness and Safety are the five expectation pillars of the BESS ROCKS program as well the need to have a code of conduct that does not discriminate against any student for any behavior.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS, STAFF AND PARENTS
STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO:
- have an advocate through the student leadership body;
- have quality instruction at the appropriate level;
- experience physical and emotional safety and well-being;
- be treated with dignity and respect;
- have input, through appropriate channels, into the making of decisions that affect them;
- experience a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning;
- be informed of their progress in courses.
STUDENTS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO:
- treat staff, parents and other students with respect and dignity in both attitudes and actions;
- attend classes, on time and prepared to learn;
- be appropriate in dress, conduct and language;
- respect school property;
- follow school rules;
- report potential incidents of bullying, harassment and/or violent acts.
STAFF HAVE A RIGHT TO:
- have an advocate through their teachers' association;
- expect cooperation from students;
- be treated with respect and dignity;
- work in a safe and supportive environment conducive to learning;
- have support from students and their homes, other staff members and the community.
STAFF HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO:
- treat students, parents and other staff with respect and dignity in both attitudes and actions
- help students develop to their full potential
- model good conduct such as punctuality, preparation and professionalism;
- create positive and safe learning situations for students;
- communicate regularly on students' progress to both students and parents;
- work cooperatively with staff, students and parents;
- protect the well-being of students.
PARENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO:
- have an advocate through the PAC and DPAC;
- have their children educated in a positive, safe, effective learning environment;
- be treated with, and have their children treated with respect, dignity and fairness;
- be informed of their children's progress, and of school activities, programs and policies;
- be involved in decisions regarding their children's education;
- feel welcome to approach staff concerning their children and other school matters.
PARENTS HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO:
- be an advocate for their children;
- treat students, staff and other parents with respect and dignity;
- ensure that their children attend school on time and are prepared to learn;
- help their children make thoughtful decisions, accept responsibility and foster good working and learning habits;
- communicate and cooperate with staff;
- work with the school towards finding and/or developing a program that best meets their child's needs;
- be informed about and supportive of the PAC.
